Adopt an Ostrich Nest

We pioneered the Adopt an Ostrich Nest Initiative in Southern Kenya — 237 juvenile Masai ostriches safeguarded so far. Adopt a nest and community members and school youth will monitor it through the breeding season.

Why it matters

A community answer to the illegal ostrich egg trade

An escalation of illegal trade activity on ostrich eggs in 2020 led to this community-led initiative, where community members and school youth identify, adopt and monitor ostrich nests in the ecosystem during the breeding season.

  • Students are trained on the ecology of the Masai ostrich (Struthio camelus massaicus).
  • Monitors collect daily data on the number of eggs laid at every adopted nest.
  • The intervention has helped stop the illegal trade of ostrich eggs in the area.
  • Citizen science: students now know average clutch sizes, how long juveniles take to emerge, and track the age, lifespan and population of ostriches.
  • We are scaling into the larger Magadi wildlife ecosystem and the Amboseli landscape.
